Thoughts

Eleri was talking about the difference between celebratory and functional magickal practice. She said she thought my Rapture stuff was good as a celebratory structure, celebrating the sacred ecstasy of life. I agree with this.

What has been missing from Rapture is the functional magickal practice, and I think that is a personal weak point. I am becoming more and more convinced that Feri is part of that. I am going to join [info]feri and see what I can find.

On that note here's my review of Evolutionary Witchcraft:

Let's start with what I don't like about a lot of paganism books and even traditions. Generally I see two types of things: cookbooks of disconnected rituals, myths and information, or generic philosophy without any idea of what it means in practice. So we have what without why and why without what. And both of those are of limited utility to me.

How Feri is described in this book talks about both the practical details and the overarching theory involved. The models they use are generally well-described on a high level, but also there are specific practices using each of the models, usually with a description of how the practice and theory relates. The depth of this discussion varies, but it is usually there.

It also provides useful heuristics for magickal work. The book lays out both an directional system (the traditional elements/direction correlation as well as up-down-center), and the Pentacle system that seems to be a distinctly Feri application (and being a geometer, I like that quite a bit).

There are a lot of scripts for guided meditation and practices, though I must admit, I start skipping over those the later I get into the book for examination when it comes to actually doing them.

So I'd put it as a very good introduction to Feri. While my interest in the tradition was piqued when I got it (from [info]queenofhalves), this definitely cemented that interest.

[info]feri is fairly slow. If you're interested in discussion, freeformcraft and witcheye on Yahoogroups are both pretty active. And check out feritradition.org for other info.

And keep in mind that Thorn's book describes *Thorn's* version of Feri, which is similar to most Reclaiming/Feri people, but Feri is a very diverse tradition; Thorn's book shares the same current with the rest of Feri, but there are people whose practices & explanations won't resemble hers much at all. (Don't be dismayed if people tell you stuff that contradicts Thorn's book, is all.)

Yeah, I got the impression that Feri is very dependent on who teaches it. That's cool with me :) I'll pick and choose what I like one way or another.
